Rukungiri: Police in Rukungiri is on a hunt for unidentified thugs alleged to have robbed John Mutusi and his wife, Phionah Amutuheire Shillings 6.8 million
These are both residents of Bunura village in Southern Division in Rukungiri municipality, Rukungiri district.
The duo were attacked around 08:00pm on Friday evening on their way home. According to Mutusi, they were happily returning from their shop in Rukungiri Daily market when two men armed with an AK 47 riffle intercepted them in their compound.
Mutusi said the gunmen sprang from their banana plantation and placed them at gunpoint as his wife got out of their pick-up motor vehicle registration number UAU 276B to open the garage.
He also said, thugs ordered them to lie down with their faces on the ground as started ransacking their pockets and vehicle.
He says the gunmen made off with Shillings 6.8 million, two mobile phones and an ignition key of the vehicle. Mutusi says they tried to get up from the ground about 20 minutes after the incident but found one found one of the robbers still pointing a gun at them and asked them not to raise alarm, which frightened them the more.
The Kigezi region Police spokesperson Elly Maate said although a police Canine dog was rushed to the scene of crime, it couldn’t trace the gunmen.
Maate added that police have registered a case of robbery at Rukungiri police station under CRB 965/2019.
In June 2018, Aldrine Nankunda, a resident of a resident of Kakyeka cell, Northern ward in Western division in Rukungiri municipality and business woman was shot on the right leg by unidentified robbers while retiring from her place of work in Rukungiri Central Market.
Nankunda drove to her home and parked her vehicle outside and used the small gate to enter her house to pick the keys to the garage. She found three unidentified thugs armed with a rifle, a knife and stick when she returned to pick the vehicle. The robber shot Nankunda and made off with Shillings 5 million.
