The number of Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections in Uganda has risen 260 after the Ministry of Health announced on Monday night May 18th, 2020, that 12 new cases had been registered among truck drivers.

Following tests that had been conducted by the COVID-19 Medical team at the Uganda Virus Research Centre and testing points at Uganda’s borders, the Ministry of Health announced in a tweet thus; “ 12 new COVID-19 cases confirmed from 1,743 samples of truck drivers. All new cases are Ugandans. The total confirmed COVID-19 cases are now 260. Total recoveries stand  at 63”

Meanwhile,  we have also learnt that the Ministry of Health has since deported  some of the truck drivers who tested positive for COVID-19 to their respective countries.

This comes after officials from the Ministry tweeted on Tuesday thus; “32 foreign truck drivers who tested positive for COVID-19 were turned back to their respective countries.”

However, suffice it to note that the  number of total infections in Uganda is cumulative and that despite  the apparent increase in infections, Uganda has not registered any single COVID-19 death, which highlights the tireless efforts the Ministry of Health and government have exerted in the fight against the pandemic.

This also comes at a time when President Yoweri Museveni decreed that all infected truck drivers shall not be allowed to drive into the mainland  as way of stopping them from spreading COVID-19 through contact with citizens they meet across borders.
