COVID-19 Global Updates: Brazil Confirms One Million Infected, With 49,000 Deaths

Brazil: Coronavirus (COVID-19) has claimed over 459,000 lives worldwide, while the number of people infected has surpassed 8.6 million globally. While European countries are easing pandemic restrictions and cancelling travel bans, people in Latin America are experiencing a considerable surge in both death tolls and infection rates.

The United States remain the most affected country, as it confirmed 2.22 million cases and almost 120,000 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.

At the same time, Brazil is suffering from a major outbreak; the number of  cases there has surpassed 1 million and approximately 49,000 deaths have been confirmed.

South Korea Records 67 New COVID-19 Cases, Number Rises To Over 12,370

Another 67 COVID-19 cases have been identified in South Korea over the past 24 hours, bringing the total count to 12,373, the Health Ministry’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said on Saturday.

Out of 67 new cases, 36 had resulted from the internal transmission. Fourteen new cases have been recorded in the capital of Seoul and 17 in the province of Gyeonggi, among others.

The death toll in South Korea stands at 280. The number of people who have recovered has increased to 10,856, according to the health authorities.

United States: NHL Says 11 Hockey Players Tested Positive for COVID-19

The National Hockey League (NHL) said that 11 out of more than 200 players who underwent COVID-19 tests have turned out to be infected with the coronavirus.

The NHL decided to suspend the season on March 12 amid the vast increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the United States.

“Since NHL Clubs were permitted to open their training facilities on June 8, all Players entering these facilities for voluntary training have been subject to mandatory testing for COVID-19. Through today, an excess of 200 Players have undergone multiple testing. A total of 11 of these Players have tested positive”, the NHL said on late Friday.

All the players who tested positive for COVID-19 have been placed in isolation, in line with the relevant protocols of the US and Canadian medical authorities.

“The NHL will provide a weekly update on the number of tests administered to Players and the results of those tests. The League will not be providing information on the identity of the Players or their Clubs,” the league added.

China Confirms 27 New COVID-19 Cases, Including 22 in Beijing

China registered 27 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, including 22 cases in Beijing, after the discovery of a new COVID-19 cluster at a major food market in the Chinese capital, the country’s National Health Commission said on Saturday.

Out of 27 new cases, 23 are local, and four had foreign origins. In addition to Beijing, one local case was detected in the northern province of Hebei. Moreover, China had detected seven asymptomatic cases of the novel coronavirus disease.

On Friday, China registered 32 new COVID-19 cases, including 25 in the capital.

Germany Records 601 New COVID-19 Cases, Total Reaches 189,135

Germany has on Friday confirmed 601 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, with the total count reaching 189,135, the Robert Koch Institute said on Saturday.

The death toll has grown by 11 to 8,883 people within the same period of time. A day earlier, the country had confirmed 770 new cases and 16 fatalities.
