COVID-19: Luzira Prison Placed Under Partial Lockdown Amidst Escalating Cases

Kampala: The new wave of coronavirus spreading like wildfire globally has led to a partial lockdown at Luzira prison headquarters-TheSpy Uganda has learnt.

According to an internal memo seen by our source at the prison, the Prisons Director of Administration has ordered all members of the prison’s top management to enforce the new directives immediately to curb the virus transmission within the prison.

”Given the trend of Covid-19 cases in Kampala Metropolitan with Luzira Barracks having positivity rate of 77 percent, the management has directed that; prison headquarters is partially locked down with immediate effect,” partially reads the memo.

In the same vein, with the new directives, the prison will have only 30% workforce working from home, while essential workers within the prison ‘must strictly’ adhere to COVID-19 SOPs.

These come few hours after the Ministry of Health announced 1,809 new COVID-19 cases from tests done on 28 December 2021 shooting the cumulative confirmed cases to 139,079.

The Ministry also has revealed that the number of patients battling the new variant-Omicron increasing in Mulago Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Units (HDU).

Currently, Mulago has 40 patients, out of which 28 are under HDU and 12 are in ICU.
