Deputy Inspector General of Police Maj.Gen Sabiiti Muzeeyi is heading a team of detectives in South Western Uganda who have arrested a suspected army deserter identified as Ben Kakuru, who was arrested from Rwampara, in Mbarara district, on suspicion of shooting three people dead in Lyantonde, on Sunday night.
After his arrest, a house search was carried out by a joint team of Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) and Flying Squad operatives, which led to recovery of 14 bullets.
Currently, the officers are interrogating the suspect to reveal where the gun is but it is yet to be recovered.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police who was recently instructed by president Yoweri Museveni to wipe out all criminal gangs in the country, has instructed the investigating teams to remain in the area until all the prime suspects are arrested.
‘’We still appeal for any information that will help in the successful arrest and prosecution of the culprits of this murder.’’ Gen.Sabiiti said Tuesday afternoon.
The security investigations commenced after three people were shot dead on October 20, 2019 at 9:30Pm in Kalilo trading center, Kalilo Sub-county, Lyantonde district. The deceased were identified as Francis Rwabwogo, in his 60s, and his wives Kellen Nakato commonly referred to as Mulongo and Leokadia Baliwahenki.
According to sources, the three were shot at their home by yet to be identified persons, although, preliminary investigations indicate that two people; sons of the deceased, are suspected to have participated in the murder. The two are Mwebaza Nathan, an army deserter and Kakuru Ben, a Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) soldier.
The Speaker Kaliiro Sub County, John Zziwa, said that “ Mwebaze had misunderstandings with his stepmother (Nakato), accusing her of having bewitched his mother who died recently. And when he (Mwebaze) raided the home, he shot Nakato. When the father emerged from the bedroom to see what had happened, he was also shot. A few hours after the shooting, Mwebaze, who occasionally visits the village, was spotted at a mobile money shop belonging to Godfrey Kawooya in the trading centre and after like four hours, we also received information that Leokadia had been gunned down.”
The three bodies were taken to Lyantonde Hospital Mortuary for postmortem as the police continue with investigations.
