The Democratic Party(DP) is rooting for talks with fellow opposition party Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), in their bid to join political power ahead of the 2021 elections.

SpyUganda has learnt that DP President General Norbert Mao has since written a letter to his counterpart Jimmy Akena, who heads UPC, seeking audience for a meeting such that they can discuss the 2021 strategy.

The letter seen by TheSpy Uganda, which Mao wrote to Akena, who is also the Lira Municipality Member of Parliament, reads in part thus;
“Mr President,
As discussed earlier we request to present to you the draft framework for a Grand Peoples Coalition which we developed. We were able to present the framework at a meeting attended by ANT and JEEMA and a delegation of senior leaders.
We now write to request you to arrange for us to present the framework to you and your team. I hope we can do that within two weeks. I look forward to working with you on a mutually agreeable date.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this request.”

It is however not yet clear whether Akena will honour Mao’s request for a meeting with UPC leaders to by DP ideology.

Suffice it to note too that currently UPC is divided in two factions, with one that side with Akena and another that supports Dr. Olara Otunnu.

In the same vein Mao, who is aiming at joining forces with UPC, also has problems within his Party, since it is divided into Good DP (Pro-NRM) and Bad DP(anti-NRM, People Power, FDC sympathisers).
It thus remains unclear why Mao roots for a ‘political marriage’ between DP and UPC without first sorting the mess in his house.
