Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, Uganda’s leading businessman, and his daughter Sheena Ruparelia will be awarded medals during the 39th NRM/A Victory Day celebrations on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the National Teachers’ College in Mubende. This recognition comes as a result of their monumental contribution to Uganda’s global reputation through the timely completion of the Conference Centre at Speke Resort Munyonyo. Their efforts enabled Uganda to successfully host the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China summits in 2024, events that brought together high-level international delegates and cemented Uganda’s status as a key player in global diplomacy.
The NAM and G77+China Summits: High Stakes for Uganda
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), a coalition of 120 nations founded during the Cold War, emphasizes neutrality and collective progress among developing countries. The G77+China, a group representing the economic interests of over 134 developing nations, works to amplify the voices of the global South within the United Nations. Hosting these two summits in Kampala was a major opportunity for Uganda to demonstrate its hospitality and readiness for global engagement.
However, the country faced a critical challenge—completing the venue for the summits in time. This was when Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia and his family rose to the occasion. With unwavering determination, they ensured that the conference center at Speke Resort Munyonyo was completed and handed over in record time, preserving Uganda’s image and avoiding potential embarrassment.
Speke Resort Munyonyo: A Crown Jewel in Hospitality
The Conference Centre at Speke Resort Munyonyo is a testament to the Ruparelia family’s dedication to excellence. Nestled along the shores of Lake Victoria, the resort is celebrated for its world-class amenities, luxurious accommodations, and advanced conference facilities. It served as the perfect venue for these high-profile summits, accommodating dignitaries and ensuring seamless execution.
A Fitting Recognition
For their invaluable efforts, Dr. Sudhir and his wife will be honored by President Yoweri Museveni during the NRM Liberation Day celebrations under the theme *“39 Years of NRM/A: Salutation to those who re-sanctified our Homeland.”* This accolade acknowledges their contribution not only to Uganda’s international standing but also to its economic development through investments in the hospitality sector.
A Legacy of Excellence
As the Ruparelia family receives this prestigious award, their work at Speke Resort Munyonyo remains a symbol of Uganda’s readiness to host world-class events. Their contribution highlights how visionary leadership can transform challenges into opportunities, leaving a legacy that inspires national pride and international recognition.
