The 50km road that was commissioned by President Museveni in December 2020, was fully funded by the government of Uganda and is a major link to the neighbouring countries of Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

The road that was contracted to China Wu Yi construction firm also serves as a transit route for tourists to the Rwenzori Mountains.

Despite being a multi-billion road, in just 2 months its stretch measuring about 300 metres from Kaihura trading centre in Butiiti sub-county, Kyenjojo district has become bumpy requiring to be reconstructed.

As a result therefore, the Chinese company has started removing the tarmac to pave way for repairs. The project manager Sun Quitang has said that they are solely responsible for the defects and they will not ask for additional money from the government of Uganda.

“There are some fragment issues because when you’re travelling the road user will feel uncomfortable, so we decided to redo it instead of patching. If you do patching you don’t look good,” said Quitang.

However, the repairing process has since left Kyenjonjo shop owners in grief saying that the steep sides of the road where their shops are located were left uncovered something that has left their shops in floods due to unrestricted running waters.

In response to the shop owners, Quitang says that they were following a road design by Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and the additional constructions were not part of their work scope.
