Sheema: There was drama in Sheema District Council this afternoon as Local Council five (LC5) Councillors quit the emergency council meeting saying that their health was at risk since the district task force had failed to facilitate them with face masks and sanitizers.
The Councillors led by Jackson Musinguzi,a representative of people with disabilities, moved a motion arguing they couldn’t proceed with the council meeting unless they were protected with face masks and sanitizer at the door way of the council Hall.
Councillors also revealed that they could not proceed with the meeting because they were hungry, arguing that meetings take long. “Meetings used to start from 10am and end at 1pm, however nowadays organizers delay meetings up to 5:00 pm,” they argued.
Angry councilors further argued that some of their fellows were too old to hear properly and talk loudly while participating in the meetings, hence a need for louder speakers and microphones which district officials refused to provide, saying the district electricity was not enough to support such machines.
“Previously Hon Nkwemeriire Robert [district speaker] told us that district council couldn’t afford to buy masks for councilors since they can afford them. “You have really disappointed me, you mean you can’t buy masks for yourselves? the speaker wondered.
By the time we filed this story, the Speaker had adjourned the meeting since Councillors because the councilors moved out in protest.
