MBARARA, Uganda: There was drama in Mbarara high court on Wednesday when Hon. Virgnia Mugyenyi revealed to court that she didn’t vote during the Sheema municipality By-elections.
The court is hearing a petition filed by Virginia Mugyenyi against minister for science and technology Hon Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, who trounced her in to scoop the seat. Mugyenyi stunned court when she was asked if she voted, upon which she responded that she didn’t because she wasn’t a registered voter of Sheema. “I didn’t vote because I wasn’t in the electoral commission register ,for me I vote from Kabingo Town council in Isingiro district but not in Sheema however the law allows me to stand as a candidate in wherever I need ” Virginia responded. Her denial prompted Dr. Elioda’s lawyers, of Kandebe Ntambirweki and Company Advocates to play a video in the court room showing Virginia voting, a thing that turned Virginia’s smiling face to ugly one. “I didn’t vote for myself but for my mum who is 75 years and above, she also has diabetes, blindness and I even have her medical documents ” Virginia said after the video clip
His Worship Andrew Bashaija the seating high court judge asked Virginia why she told journalists that she voted on her behalf. Virginia asked for forgiveness claiming she did all that because she wanted to clear her name which was tarnished during election campaigns. The judge later adjourned the case up to Thursday (Today) and asked Mugyenyi’s lawyers, Isabirye & Company Advocates to return to court with complete affidavits since all witnesses didn’t attach the important documents in the affidavit.
