Health authorities in Fort Portal are on high alert after four suspected cases of Ebola were reported in the region. While the news has raised concerns among medical professionals and the public, hospital officials have reassured that no confirmed cases have been registered yet.

Dr. Bahizi Archibald Newton, the Acting Director of Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, clarified that the suspected individuals may have had contact with a person who recently passed away. Samples have been sent to Kampala for further testing, and results are expected soon.

Addressing the public, Dr. Bahizi urged citizens to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to prevent any potential spread of the virus. He emphasized the importance of maintaining proper hygiene, avoiding physical contact, and promptly reporting any suspected symptoms to health authorities.

The Ebola scare in Fort Portal comes at a time when Uganda’s health sector is grappling with funding challenges due to recent cuts in international aid. Several global donors have reduced or withdrawn financial support, citing concerns related to governance and human rights. This has resulted in budget constraints in critical areas, including epidemic preparedness and response.

With reduced external support, Uganda’s ability to effectively manage potential outbreaks like Ebola is under scrutiny. Many health facilities, especially in rural areas, face shortages of medical supplies, understaffing, and limited laboratory capacity, which could affect the country’s response to emerging health threats.

Despite these challenges, the Ministry of Health has reassured the public that contingency measures are in place to contain any outbreak, should the suspected cases in Fort Portal test positive for Ebola. The government has also emphasized the need for increased local investment in the health sector to reduce reliance on foreign aid.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to remain calm as they await the test results from Kampala.
