Kampala: Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) announced a revised electoral roadmap on Wednesday, setting the date for the 2026 presidential and parliamentary elections. According to Justice Simon Byabakama, the chairperson of the EC, nominations for these elections will take place between September 17 and October 3, 2025.

Campaigns are scheduled to commence in the second week of October 2025, leading up to the presidential and parliamentary elections, which are set for January 12, 2026.

Justice Byabakama  also noted that the process of demarcating electoral areas and reorganizing polling stations will begin in August 2024 and it aims to define areas for Directly Elected Councillors, Women Councillors, and Councillors representing Special Interest Groups.

“We are going to begin the demarcation of electoral areas and reorganisation of polling stations in August 2024,” Byabakama said while addressing the participants during the National workshop for stakeholders on demarcation of electoral areas and reorganization of polling stations at Hotel Africana on Tuesday this week.

He also highlighted the need for  re-organization of polling stations which he says will ensure manageable voter numbers and accessibility.

”The exercise will address new administrative units, voter growth, and will include relocating and splitting polling stations as needed” he added.

In the previous 2021 general election, 11 presidential candidates, including the incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, contested. Museveni secured victory with 58.64% of the vote, defeating his main opponent, Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, who garnered 34.83% of the votes. Museveni, now 79, is expected to seek re-election.
