Kampala: Editors’ Guild, an umbrella organization for editors in Uganda, together with lawyers under ‘Centre for Public Interest Law’ have dragged the government of Uganda and Uganda Media council to court challenging the bogus directives that require journalists to apply and get accredetation letters before they’re authorized to cover the 2021 general elections and several other state events.

According to court summons, the applicants want a Judicial review and an order to quash the directives of the media council of Uganda issued relating to the same,urguing that they intend to curtail the press freedom and civic space.
They also want the court to quash the illegal registration and accreditation of journalists to cover the 2021 general elections and other state events and declare that the registration of journalists by the media council of Uganda without an operational national institute of journalists of Uganda (NIJU) to enrol journalists in accordance with the press and journalists act cap 105 is illegal and irregular.
In addition, they want Court to order prohibition and permanent injunction restraining the respondent’s security agencies from implementing the illegal, irregular and irrational directives of the media council.
Court is yet to set date for hearing the application.
