The Electoral Commission has concluded updating of the National Voters’ register after several days which were given to Ugandans to verify their details, ahead of the 2021 General Election.
According to a message issued by the EC today, the Commission has wound up the exercise, after receiving reports from their staff members that at least all eligible voters in Uganda have verified their details and are ready for the 2021 election.
Here below is an official statement from the Commission about the conclusion of the exercise;
The Electoral Commission informs the general public that the exercise for general update of the National Voters’ Register ends today, Monday 23rd 2019, at all registration/update centers countrywide.
The general update exercise commenced on Thursday 21st November 2019, and was scheduled to end on 11th December 2019 but was extended for an additional five days (12th December – 16th December 2019, and a further extension of seven days, from 17th December to 23rd December 2019.
The Commission made the above extensions because of the unfavorable weather conditions in many parts of the country and high turn up of applicants at update stations. The extended period provided an opportunity for eligible persons who had not yet registered to do so.
There shall be no further extension of the exercise.
Accordingly, Monday 23rd December 2019 was appointed as the cut off date for registration of voters throughout Uganda. Registration as a voter and application for transfer of voting particulars from one polling station to another will not be conducted after today.
The Commission appreciates the support of various stakeholders in the electoral process for their role in mobilising eligible persons to register and/or apply for transfer of voting location.
The Electoral Commission reminds all stakeholders to participate in the other electoral activities as scheduled in the Roadmap for the 2020/2021 General Elections.
May this Festive Season bring us great joy and renew our commitment and partnership as Ugandans, towards building a strong sustainable democracy through peaceful, free and fair elections.
Wishing you all a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, 2020
Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon Chairperson,
Electoral Commission
