Electoral Petition: ANT’s Mwiru Legally Loses Jinja Parliamentary Seat To NRM’s Nabeta

The Court of Appeal yesterday dismissed an electoral petition by the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT)’s former Jinja East MP Paul Mwiru challenging the win of National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s Nathan Igeme Nabeta.

In his petition, Mwiru was accusing the Electoral Commission and Nabeta of conniving to rob his victory in the January 2021 election by falsification of results, thereby affecting the outcome substantially.

However, the three justices dismissed his appeal on the ground that he filed his memorandum of appeal out of time and in so doing, the court confirmed Nabeta as the substantive MP.

Same court ordered troubled Mwiru to cough millions to Nabeta for wasting his time in the endless court battles.

In the first court battle, High Court Judge Issa Sserunkuma had also dismissed this petition saying Mwiru failed to convince the court that there was sufficient ground to call for the nullification of Nabeta’s victory.

Remember that twice before, the two have contested and ended up in court with Mwiru winning. This time the defeated MP will spend the rest of the term on the sidelines.

Mwiru, a former FDC staunch member lost to Nabeta by a margin of about 300 votes. Nabeta got 5,621 votes while Mwiru got 5,355 votes.
