Local leaders in Kasese District have expressed deep concern over the rising cases of teenage pregnancies, particularly among school-going girls. This growing trend is contributing to increased school dropout rates, threatening the future of many young girls in the region.

During a recent visit to Busongora North County, His Majesty Wesley Charles Mumbere, the King of Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu, urged young girls to prioritize their education and avoid early pregnancies. Speaking at Kitswamba 1 Primary School, he commended the President of Uganda for offering scholarships to support students within the kingdom.

Her Highness Queen Agnes Ithungu also addressed the issue, encouraging girls to focus on their education and safeguard their health. She cautioned them against engaging in risky behaviors and urged them to resist advances from men.

Members of Parliament Hon. Kitanywa Sowedi (Busongora North County) and Hon. Kabugho Florence (Kasese Woman MP) reinforced these messages, citing poor parenting, high dropout rates, and exposure to risky social activities, such as attending discos, as major contributors to teenage pregnancies. They emphasized the urgent need for community sensitization programs targeting both boys and girls.

Recent statistics indicate that one in four Ugandan girls aged 15-19 has either had a child or is currently pregnant. However, due to stigma and fear, many young mothers avoid seeking proper medical care and instead rely on traditional birth attendants, putting their health and lives at risk.

Local leaders are calling for stronger interventions, including enhanced education, community awareness programs, and responsible parenting initiatives, to combat the crisis and safeguard the future of young girls in Kasese.
