Kampala: The government through the Ministry of Works and Transport will next week commence the issuance of travel permits to the essential workers who have been allowed to travel with vehicles during the second national lockdown which started on Friday after the president announced another lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.
The groups that will be allowed to travel include among others health workers, patients, select government workers as well as people working in key sectors such as banking, utilities and mass communication.
President Yoweri Museveni while announcing the lockdown yesterday, ordered the Ministry Works to issue special permits for such groups thus the decision to carry out the exercise online.
The ministry noted that applicants through their employers will download a movement request form from the Ministry of Works website and the form will then be filled and submitted to the same link with the names of the health workers and other essential workers that will be working throughout this period.
The Ministry of Works and Transport will either accept or deny permission of the request. Feedback will be communicated through the same link where a movement permit will be generated once permission is granted.
The movement permit will have a QR code, names of the essential worker, name of the place of work and the National Identification Number (NIN). The permit will still be downloaded from the MoWT provided online link.
Ministry of Health has however advised their staff to “move with the movement permit, their work identification cards and those without should those be given authorization letters by the heads of the health facilities to enable easy movement to their respective facilities.”
Patients catered under the transport exception are; emergency patients, scheduled patients for drug refills (HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, Cancer and hypertension) and those with scheduled clinic appointments.
