Kampala: Don’t say we didn’t warn you! The next time you visit Speke Resort Munyonyo, make sure to let everyone know you’re staying at a 5-star hotel, the highest rating in the global hospitality industry.
As per the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), the body responsible for registering, licensing, and classifying accommodation facilities under the Uganda Tourism Act of 2008, Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Ltd (commonly known as Speke Resort Munyonyo) has officially earned a Five-Star status, making it the top hotel in Uganda. This milestone was officially communicated to the hotel’s management on December 16, 2024, through a letter from UTB’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Lilly Ajarova.
“UTB conducted a nationwide grading and classification of accommodation facilities from June to August 2024, following statutory instrument No.82 of 2008. As a result of this exercise, we are pleased to congratulate Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Ltd for achieving a Five-Star rating,” the letter from Ajarova reads.
This achievement now places Munyonyo at the same level as other five-star hotels worldwide.
Munyonyo is part of the Ruparelia Group, owned by prominent businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, a native of Kasese, western Uganda. Dr. Ruparelia is also the Honorary Consul of Nepal to Uganda.
Known for its dedication to eco-friendly practices, expansive grounds, and a strong commitment to high service standards and sustainability, Speke Resort has long been an icon in Uganda’s tourism industry. It recently received the Ekkula Pearl of Africa Tourism Award in recognition of its role in transforming the hospitality sector.
Speke Resort Munyonyo is a pioneer in sustainable luxury, blending eco-conscious practices with exceptional hospitality. The resort’s commitment to environmental responsibility is clear in its extensive sustainability initiatives, which aim to minimize environmental impact, conserve resources, and benefit the local community.
One of the resort’s standout features is its use of green energy and water conservation measures, implemented throughout the property. The well-maintained gardens not only enhance the resort’s beauty but also foster local biodiversity, creating a peaceful environment that attracts both wildlife and tourists.
Through recycling programs, waste reduction strategies, and responsible sourcing, the resort actively works to reduce its carbon footprint.
Speke Resort is also committed to supporting the local economy. It offers job opportunities to residents, showcases Ugandan culture, and promotes products from local artisans, enriching guests’ experiences while benefiting the surrounding community.
Speke Resort Munyonyo’s success at the Ekkula Pearl of Africa Tourism Awards highlights its leadership in sustainable hospitality, serving as a model for Uganda’s tourism sector and inspiring other hotels to prioritize sustainability.
Now that Speke Resort has earned its Five-Star status, the next time you make plans, just say, “Hi! Let’s meet at the only five-star hotel for dinner.” You will thank me later.
