Farmers’ Guide With Joseph Mugenyi: Tips On Growing Maize

Kampala: Maize is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous people about 10,000 years ago.

The leafy stalk of the plant produces pollen inflorescence and separate ovuliferous inflorescence called ears that yield kernels or seeds, which are fruits.

How to grow Maize

1. Prepare your land

2. Dig holes of about 5-7cms deep using a hoe.

3. Plant 2-4 seeds per hole

4. Cover gently with soil.

5. Do the weeding.

You use a hoe or hands.

But you can also use selective herbicides e.g. metrazin to control weeds in maize.

6. Apply fertilizers and insecticides twice per month before harvesting.

7. After 14-17 weeks you will be harvesting.

NB: In maize growing little care and capital is needed.

This means everyone can manage this unlike other crops.

 Recently a kg of maize costs 1,200shs. A 100kgs sack costs 120,000shs.

So it’s on high demand and its market is everywhere.
