Kampala: Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) activist Sam Mugumya has been released from Ndoro military detention in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) prison after 8 years of incarceration.
The 43-year-old opposition political activist was arrested in 2014 and remanded by Congolese authorities for allegedly participating in rebellious activities along with four others including Joseph Kamugisha who was a Boda Boda rider by then, Aggrey Kamukama, (then a businessman in Rukungiri Town), Steven Mugisha, (then a trader) and Nathan Bright whose whereabouts still remain unknown.
According to sources, Mugumya, a former aide to Dr Kizza Besigye, is still in the Congo awaiting further discharge orders after being released on Friday morning by the Congolese military detention.
Mugumya participated in the 2011 Rukungiri municipality parliamentary elections in the FDC party primaries won by Mr Roland Mugume Kaginda.
Following Mugumya’s release, a couple of opposition leaders have come out to congratulate the FDC die-hard upon regaining his freedom after 8 years in detention.
”After eight years of illegal detention in Ndolo military Prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo, our political activist Sam Mugumya has now gained temporary freedom. We shall keep you updated on this encouraging development. Injustice will be quelled through the struggle” FDC said in a statement.

The ‘owners’ of this country are questioning your return home. Alluta continua” FDC President Patrick Amuriat Oboi Wrote on Twitter.
National Unity Platform (NUP) President NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine also added his voice to his FDC counterparts saying Mugumya’s freedom after 8years in prison is a testament to the massive sacrifices many people have to make in pursuit of freedom and democracy for Uganda.
”Such heartwarming news! Delighted to learn that after 8 years under military detention in the DRC, our brother and comrade Sam Mugumya is free. Testament to the enormous sacrifices many people have had to make in pursuit of freedom and democracy for Uganda! We shall overcome!” Bobi Wine said.
