Fear has gripped the media fraternity and scribes at NBS TV in particular after popular journalist Samson Kasumba was arrested by policemen on Monday and has been held incommunicado for several hours now.
Despite alerting several of his fellow scribes that he had been arrested on Monday night, by Tuesday no news or information had been heard about Kasumba’s arrest.
The police have not yet issued any statement about his arrest and agitation is currently engulfing his workmates. Simon K Njala, the host of ‘Morning Breeze’ on NBS TV, tweeted thus on Tuesday morning thus; “Dear @PoliceUg, my amiable and flamboyant brother @SamsonKasumba spent the night in your coolers on charges we’re yet to know. #Journalismisnotacrime”
Canary Mugume, another journalist, also tweeted thus; “nbstv Senior anchor Samson Kasumba was arrested last night in Kamwokya and is currently being detained at Kira road police station. Police has not charged him yet, we are still uncertain of the reasons behind his arrest.”
This website understands that Kasumba is currently being detained at Kira Road Police station, although they’ve not get given reasons for his arrest.
According to sources, he was arrested last after his 9:00 Pm news bulletin as he made his way home. He was arrested at the roadblock mounted immediately after NBS gate along Kira Road.
Independent On-line journalists Association (Indoja-U) president Andrew Irumba told this reporter on phone that as a media organization, they’ve given police an ultimatum of only two hours to formally inform the country, Kasumba in particular and his employers of the charges, so they can start working on his Right to police bond or him being presented before court.
Next Media Services CEO Kin Kariisa, where Kasumba works, also said Police at Kira Road said they didn’t know why they arrested him, but were still waiting for further guidance.
