Collapsed buildings are a growing problem in Uganda and East Africa at large, where many buildings are under construction or renovation as the region’s major cities experience a property boom. The incidents have become frequent apparently because some property developers bypass regulations to cut costs.

In Kampala, Uganda, one study counted 54 building collapse deaths and 122 injuries between 2004 and 2008. Another study identified 112 cases in Lagos, Nigeria from December 1978 to April 2008. Between February and May 2019, 29 deaths and 76 injuries were recorded from 13 building collapse incidents across Nigeria.

In March at least 30 people were killed when a building under construction collapsed in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial capital.
In May six people were killed and dozens more injured when a building under construction collapsed in eastern Rwanda town.
