The Chief of Defense Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has arrived in Algiers, Algeria, for a series of high-level military and bilateral engagements aimed at bolstering defense cooperation between the two nations.

Accompanied by senior UPDF generals, including Maj Gen James Birungi, the Chief of Defense Intelligence and Security; Maj Gen Bob Ogiki, Joint Staff Policy and Strategy; and Maj Gen Keith Katungi, Commander of the 5th Division Infantry, Gen Kainerugaba was warmly received by top officials of the Algerian military upon arrival.

During his visit, Gen Kainerugaba is set to meet his counterpart, General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of Algeria’s People’s National Army. Their discussions will center on strengthening defense collaboration, counterterrorism efforts, intelligence sharing, and joint military training initiatives.

This visit is part of Gen Kainerugaba’s consistent efforts to expand Uganda’s defense diplomacy. In the past, he has undertaken similar missions overseas, including his notable visit to Moscow in 2022, where he engaged with senior Russian military officials to discuss defense technology and training programs. He also traveled to Egypt in 2021, where he held meetings with Egyptian military leaders, focusing on regional security, counterterrorism strategies, and joint military exercises.

Gen Kainerugaba, who also serves as the Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, has been at the forefront of Uganda’s push to establish strong military and security alliances globally. His previous engagements have led to successful partnerships in areas such as military training, equipment acquisition, and peacekeeping operations.

While in Algeria, Gen Kainerugaba will also meet other senior leaders of the Algerian Armed Forces. His visit underscores Uganda’s commitment to fostering deeper bilateral relations and enhancing military cooperation with Algeria, a key partner in North Africa.
