General Museveni Passes Out Over 6000 Local Defence Personel

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni dubbed Commander in Chief of the UPDF yesterday passed out 6237 Local Defence Personel (LDP) after completing basic military training at Recruits Training School (RTS), Kaweweta.

Kaweweta is the location of the “Oliver Tambo School of Leadership”, an installation of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).

The school was established in 1989 to house freedom fighters (Umkonto we Sizwe) of the African National Congress (ANC), the installation, over the years turned into a training camp for both the ANC from South Africa and the National Resistance Army (NRA) from Uganda. By 1994, it housed 3,000 South African soldiers, of whom 14 died of natural causes and are buried at Kaweweta.

Asked why the UPDF is recruiting more LDU personnel, deputy Force’s spokesperson, Lt Col Ronald Kakurungu last year said these assist the UPDF in fulfilling its constitutional mandate of defending the sovereignty and integrity of Uganda.

“The LDU are part of the security apparatus that we call auxiliary forces. We have previously worked with them, like the operation in Northern Uganda against the Lord Resistance Army (LRA), in Western Uganda against the Alliance Democratic Forces (ADF) and in the Karamoja disarmament operations,” he said.

As we report this, Uganda has over 30000 LDP recruits countrywide, most of whom were recruited in 2018 following an increased wave of crime in various parts of the country including killing of some high profile personalities.
