Kampala: Ugandan government has fully restored social media, according to State Minister for ICT Peter Ogwang.
“Internet and social media services have been fully restored. We apologize for the inconveniences caused, but it was for the security of our country. Let’s be constructive, NOT destructive consumers/users of social media,” said Ogwang.
It should be remembered that internet was switched off on the eve of the elections held on January 14, that prompted Ugandans to use Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to by pass the ban.

Before switching off, national telecommunications regulator, Uganda Communications Commission had wrote to telecom and Internet service providers to block access to Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube, and other social media and messaging sites.
Basing on real-time metrics Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, Skype, Viber, Google Play Store, some Telegram servers and link shortening services among a lengthy list of a pre-selected set of social websites were left unavailable via Uganda’s main cell network operators.
