Government is in process of renewing MTN Uganda’s operator license for another period of ten years according to the minister of ICT Hon Frank Tumwebaze.
MTN’s license is set to expire at the end of this moth Sept but according to Hon. Tumwebaze, the Ministry of ICT was given a go ahead by the cabinet that sat on Monday under the Chairmanship of President Museveni to renew the license with new stringent terms in pursuit of the Broadband policy goals.
Tumwebaze said the renewed license will have clear terms and conditions that aims at ensuring quality of service for Ugandans.
‘’When the then Minister for works and communications where this ministry was derived from issued the first license to MTN in 1998, the challenges were different from today’s, the concern then was more about telephone penetration which MTN and other operators have helped to achieve but now that even the person from the very last corner of the country can access a phone, our main concern is now about reliability and affordability of the service’’. Tumwebaze said.
‘’If l load data am I able to use it as l want? Service was not targeted initially because you cannot of course plan for what you don’t have, we have many smart phones now it was not the case those days’’. Tumwebaze added.
