Kampala: The latest we are getting from Nairobi is that Bank of Uganda (BoU) Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile is fighting for his life at Agakhan Hospital where he was rushed after collapsing on New Year’s Eve.
72-year-old Mutebile is said to be battling diabetes-related complications.
According to rumours, Mutebile’s unstable health triggered President Museveni to appoint Dr Michael Atingi-Ego the new deputy governor of Bank of Uganda so that there was a substantial person to make decisions and avoid leaving a leadership vacuum.
Mutebile who is actually the longest-serving Bank of Uganda Governor had previously been admitted at Nakasero hospital for a number of weeks in April 2021 and in 2020.
He was later discharged and continued to be monitored from his Kololo based home.
Mutebile was in January 2021 re-appointed as the governor of the Bank of Uganda, for a fifth five-year term despite being frail for the last six years and he was first appointed governor in 2001.
