Gov’t Bows To People Power, Frees Bobi Wine

Kampala: People Power pressure group leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, the Member of Parliament for Kyadondo East, has been granted bail from prison this afternoon.
Bobi Wine, who was remanded to Luzira prison by Buganda Road magistrate Esther Nahirya last Thursday for staging illegall OTT Tax protests in 2018, was granted cash bail of Shs1,000,000. His four sureties bonded Shs10,000,000 non cash each by the same court.
However, Bobi Wine was given tough conditions by the presiding magistrate Nahirya, which include not holding any unlawful demonstrations, failure to which will lead to the cancellations of his bail.
“You are not allowed to engage in any unlawful demonstrations and if you breach this condition, the bail will be cancelled,” magistrate Nahirya said during a video conferenced court hearing on Thursday morning. Prosecution alleges that Bobi Wine, his brother Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, one David Lule, Edward Sebufu and others still at large disobeyed section 5 and 10 of the Public Order Management Act 2013 by holding a public meeting without giving notice to any authorized officer, acts which they committed last year.
However, Bobi Wine’s release comes a few days after the United States and international community putting pressure on government to release him. Shortly after his arrest last week, US president Donald Trump directed the authorities in Uganda to release Bobi Wine. US Senator Bob Menendez also riled the government for what he termed as ‘persecuting political opponents, eroding civil liberties, attacking fundamental freedoms and closing political space..” However, by the time we went to press, Bobi Wine was still at Luzira prisons, waiting for his lawyers to finalise paperwork for his release.
