Gov’t Finally Approves Salary Enhancements For Health Professionals

The government has approved salary enhancements for a number of health professionals in the country, starting in the 2022-23 financial year, which kicks off on July 01.

At least Shs400bn has been set aside for the increment of salaries in the next financial year alone.

The move to increase these salaries was confirmed by Catherine Bitarakwate-Musingwiire, the Ministry of Public Service Permanent Secretary.

The wage bill for the health sector will rise from the current Shs694bn to a little over Shs1tn.

Medical officers, dental surgeons, and pharmacists: From Shs3m to Shs5m

Ambulance driver: From Shs237,000 to Shs500,000

Nurse (certificate level): From Shs613,000 to Shs1m

Nursing, laboratory, theater, mortuary, and dental assistants: to Shs500,000

Nurse (diploma Level, U5 scale): From Shs1.2m to Shs2m

Medical officers (U6 scale): From Shs850,000 to Shs1.5m.

Graduate scientists: From Shs1.7m to Shs4m.

Earlier this year in a meeting held to curb protests, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni told doctors that government will continue to improve the training and remuneration budget for scientists “so that the country can be able to train and retain them since they are crucial for the development and sustainability of the country.”

The President advised the intern doctors and other health workers to desist from protests but to always take the line of dialogue when advocating for their rights. He assured them that he is always ready to engage in dialogue with the medical professionals because of the importance of their profession and the services they render to the population.
