Hearing of the case in which 2021 Presidential aspirant Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde is accused of treason and illegal possession of firearms has been adjourned by court to August 2020.
Tumukunde’s case was adjourned Monday June 22nd, 2020 by City Hall court magistrate Valerian Tumuhimbise, who pushed it to August 20, 2020, when hearing of the same is set to start.
The adjournment followed a request by State prosecutors to defer the case due to insufficient inquiry into the matter, praying to court to grant them 4 weeks, within which they will have sorted out the issues.
Tumukunde was granted bail in May 2020 after spending over two months in Luzira Prison. He was in March formally charged with unlawful possession of fire arms and treason.
It is alleged that Lt Gen Tumukunde on March 5th, 2020, during NBS TV’s Morning Breeze Show, allegedly said that it would be better if Rwanda backed opposition forces to remove President Museveni’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) government from power.
“If I was Rwanda, I would wish to support people who want to cause change in Uganda,” Tumukunde said during the Morning Breeze show.
When he was reading the charges, City Hall magistrate Valerian Tumuhimbise said Tumukunde’s statements during the NBS TV Show were aimed at “instigating the Republic of Rwanda to Invade the Republic of Uganda to cause change of government.”
The State also charged the former Security Minister with unlawful possession of an AK47 rifle, a Star pistol and 30 rounds of ammunition.
Prosecution alleges that Tumukunde, while at Impala Avenue in Kololo, Kampala on March 13, was found with a modified AK47 number 19865-U3618 without a valid firearm certificate and a Star pistol number EL-860030 yet he didn’t have a certificate, which is contrary to Section 3(1) of the Fire Arms Amendment Act Cap 299.
He however denies all the allegations saying they are politically motivated.
