Horror! Two Senior Medics; Dr Kiggundu, Kigozi Succumb To COVID-19!

Kampala: It is a shocking day for the nation and Uganda Medical Association (UMA) as duo senior medics Dr Charles Kiggundu and Dr Fred Kigozi succumb to deadly COVID-19 at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

According to UMA, Dr Kiggundu was a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and former President of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Uganda and a real advocate for reproductive health and post-abortion care.

“Until a few hours to his death, Dr Kiggundu was the consultant on duty in Kawempe hospital,” UMA’s statement asserts, “While Dr Kigozi, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and former Director of Butabika hospital.”

As if the above shocking deaths are not enough, Dr. Richard Idro, the President of UMA says that the medical fraternity still has other doctors battling with COVID-19 in various hospitals.

Richard, however, expresses his worry over the ongoing Presidential and Parliamentary campaigns, the Christmas and the upcoming new year festivities where he suspects more and fresh Covid-19 transmissions once an urgent discussion for new strategies of how to protect senior doctors and those with comorbidities is not done.

The development comes hours after the Ministry of Health confirmed 308 new cases and 2 deaths from results of COVID-19 tested on 28 December 2020, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to 34,281 and 250 deaths.

The breakdown of the new cases are: 307 contacts and alerts: Kampala (194), Wakiso (51), Kabarole (10), Kiruhura (9), Tororo (7), Kasese (6), Gulu (4), Mubende (3), Luwero (3), Kamwenge (3), Kitagwenda (3), Hoima (2), Yumbe (1), Amuru (1), Bundibugyo (1), Butaleja (1), Ntungamo (1), Kyankwanzi (1), Ntungamo (1), Mbale (1), Arua (1), Mbarara (1), Kazo (1), Nebbi (1).
