Kampala: The Uganda Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Martin Okoth Ochola has ordered for a heavy police deployment of Officers alongside her sister security agencies in northern Uganda refugee camps to avert the rising criminal activities.
The deployment comes in after former South Sudan militia Abdul Abubakari a refugee in Parolinya Base camp grabbed a gun from a Uganda Police Constable Masudio Scovia, who had gone to ease herself and threatened to shoot at her if she made an alarm.
While terrified, Masudio later informed her boss ASP Ian Natukunda, who responded with a view of disarming the suspect. In the process, he was shot in the chest and injured critically. The suspect was also shot at the buttocks after he failed to yield attempts
IGP Ochola, worked closely with the family of the victim, to airlift and transfer him to Nakasero Hospital, where he was operated on, following grave injuries that shattered one of his right ribs and also damaged part of his lung.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga has revealed that after learning the situation, IGP has with immediate effect tasked territorial Police in North Western Region, to actively investigate the case of theft of a gun, and the attempted murder of the OC Parolinya Base camp police post, as more heavy deployment is worked to screen, monitor and investigate the behaviours, activities and connects of such unruly refugees.
“We strongly condemn such incidents as absolutely unacceptable. Although this was the first kind of such attacks from a Refugee Camp, we would like to stress the importance of all refugees abiding by the laws of our country. And to further remind them, that those who commit crimes against each other, must know that there are consequences to their violent actions,” he said.
Uganda joint security organs have woken up to investigate such cases to avoid terror groups like Lord resistance army operatives, South Sudan militias and Al-Shabaab not to use refugee camps as humanitarian grounds to wage military wars with in Uganda.
