This afternoon, Martha Karua Wangari has successfully secured a temporary practicing certificate to represent her clients, Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Hajj Obed Kamuregeya, after submitting a fresh application on December 23, 2024.

Karua Shows her certificate on Tuesday morning

This marked her second attempt after an earlier application was rejected due to various concerns, including an issue involving Lukwago’s use of a KCCA email for private legal matters. The initial denial by the Law Council sparked significant criticism within legal circles, with the Kenya Law Society even hinting at retaliatory measures against Ugandan lawyers.

With the certificate now granted, Karua is set to lead a team of over 100 lawyers in the General Court Martial tomorrow, as Dr. Kiiza Besigye returns to court. Both Besigye and Kamuregeya were reportedly abducted from Kenya and later charged before the military tribunal with allegations of threatening national security and engaging in subversive activities.

This success is among other achievements attributed to the current leadership of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) under the no-nonsense Isaac Ssemakadde. Ssemakadde has boldly opposed the earlier decision of the Uganda Law Council, a stark departure from some of his predecessors who were criticized for aligning with state interests. Since taking office, Ssemakadde has been steadfast in steering the society onto the correct path, consistently championing justice and fairness without fear or favor.

Isaac Ssemakadde, President of the Uganda Law Society, had earlier urged the Law Council to reconsider its decision. In his statement, he underscored the significance of this move in upholding the principles of justice and fairness.

“This was a pivotal moment for the council to reflect on its stance regarding cross-border legal practice and to exhibit genuine transparency and equity. With the approval of her application, Ms. Karua will now have the opportunity to lead the defense team for Dr. Besigye and Hajj Obed Lutale at the General Court Martial,” Ssemakadde remarked.

The granting of this certificate signifies a significant step forward, allowing Karua to advocate for her clients in one of the most high-profile legal battles in recent memory.
