Internet Tax: Telecom Companies Pass On The Tax To Consumers

Kampala: On July 1st, 2021, the government dismissed Over-the-Top (OTT) services and instead resolved to tax mobile internet data directly. This meant that Ugandans can access/use social media platforms without OTT tax or using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). (https://northeastohiogastro.com)

So Government imposed a 12% on mobile internet which is one of the seven taxes of the Excise Duty (Amendment) Bill 2021 that the Members of Parliament [the 11th Parliament] agreed to put in place starting this financial year (July 1st, 2021).

Netizens, mostly those subscribed to newly established Lycamobile in Uganda on July 2 woke up to a whole new price package, increased by shs5,000 more after the company agreed to pass on the tax to its subscribers.

Below Are The New Lycamobile Uganda Data Prices; Both Old & New

However, compared to other telecom charges like MTN, Airtel, Africell among others, Lycamobile still has the most affordable rate card.

For instance, Lycamobile’s 20GB is at shs15000 whereas MTN vends the same at shs50,000.
