Kampala: Nicholas Opiyo the executive director of Chapter Four Uganda, a human rights organization who was arrested last week has been granted a 15 million cash bail.
His release comes after Court last week further remanded him to Kitalya Prison on an option to apply for bail before that due date. Meanwhile, his lawyers said would apply for his application today, Wednesday, December 30, 2020, before the High Court Judge Jane Kajunga which has been granted successfully.
Opiyo was mid-December picked up from Lamaro restaurant located in Kamwokya together with other lawyers including Herbert Dakasi, Anthony Odur and Esomu Obure, and Hamid Tenywa before being handcuffed and detained at the Special Investigations Division in Kireka.

According to Police, the lawyers were arrested because of receiving $340,000 through an Absa bank account belonging to Chapter Four Uganda, an organization he heads, “knowing that at the time of receipt, the funds were proceeds of crime.”
