Kampala: For the last two years Karamoja Region has battled deadly cattle rustlers that terrorize communities- disrupting relative peace in the region.
Now, Michael Longole, the Karamoja Regional Police Spokesperson says the joint security forces killed 85 and arrested 600 rustlers during disarmament operations from January-December 2021.
Longole says they also recovered 135 guns, 1271 live ammunition from the rustlers.
“We are registering progress in recovering guns and we are dealing with those hardcore criminals who attempt to resist arrest, so far 386 have been sentenced for various crimes,” says Longole.
In September, President Museveni summoned top security commanders from UPDF, Special Forces Command, Police and the Internal Security Organisation over insecurity in Karamoja.
In a meeting held at Morulinga State Lodge in Napak District, Museveni said the revenge attacks had led to the birth of other criminals who had taken advantage of the situation to form gangs using mobile phones across clans to raid and steal animals.
