Authorities in Bwera Division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic drowning of a 41-year-old man in Kasese District.

The victim, identified as Muhindo Samuel, also known as Kinyanyau, was a resident of Nyabugando I, Nyabugando Ward, Mpondwe Town Council. According to reports, Muhindo drowned on March 19, 2025, after he fell into a water-filled gully while attempting to unblock a drainage system. The strong current swept him away, leading to his untimely death. His body was recovered the following day at approximately 1:50 PM.
Police responded promptly and transported the remains to Bwera Hospital for a postmortem examination as investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Kasese Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, confirmed the ongoing inquiry and urged the public to exercise caution around open water bodies. He also emphasized the importance of reporting hazardous areas to local authorities to prevent similar accidents.

Kasese District, located in the Rwenzori East Region, has experienced multiple drowning incidents, particularly during the rainy season when water collects in depressions and unmarked pits. These gullies, often formed by erosion, mining activities, or construction projects, pose significant dangers to residents, especially in areas with inadequate drainage systems.
Local authorities have previously warned about the risks posed by water-filled pits and have urged community leaders to fence off hazardous locations. However, recurring incidents like this highlight the need for stricter safety measures and improved drainage management.
SP Tumushime assured the public that investigations are ongoing to determine whether negligence or other factors contributed to the drowning. He reiterated the need for vigilance and urged residents to report any potentially dangerous water bodies to authorities to prevent further tragedies.
