Mr Abubaker Kawalya, the councilor for Rubaga North, has been elected Speaker for Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in a hotly contested election.
The positions of speaker and deputy speakers of the Authority and divisions were created following Amendment of the KCCA Act.
The speakers will now preside over council meetings that were previously chaired by Mayors.
Four had showed interest in the position of speaker at KCCA.
They were Makerere University Councilor, Doreen Nyanjura, Abubakar Kawalya of Lubaga Division, Muhammad Segirinya, from Kawempe Division and Kyambogo University representative Bruhan Byaruhanga.
In an election that was held on Thursday afternoon at the City Hall in Kampala, Kawalya got the majority 17 votes while FDC’ s Nyanjura got 14. Segirinya came last with only 1 vote.
Kawalya is also a member of FDC but his strong affiliation to ‘People Power’ forced FDC to front Nyanjura as their candidate for the election.
