Kirumira Murder Suspect Further Remanded

By Samuel Opio

The suspect in the murder of former Buyende District Police Commander Muhammad Kirumira and his female friend Resty Nalinnya Mbabazi has been further remanded to Kigo prison pending investigations in the matter.

Grade One Magistrate Martin Kirya further remanded Kalungi after court heard that investigations in the case were still incomplete.

State prosecutor Mariam Kamushaba told court that she needed more time to investigate the case and prayed for adjournment.

“Your worship, inquiries are still ongoing. I request the case be adjourned to a later date as investigations continue,” Ms Kamushaba said.

The case has now been adjourned to November 30 for further mention.

After the court procedure, prisons officers escorted the suspect back to cells. However, before being locked in the cells, Kalungi took an opportunity to speak out to journalists claiming that he is being framed by security operatives.

Prosecution led by Ms. Kamushaba states that on September 8, 2018 at about 8:00pm in Bulenga, Wakiso District, Kalungi with others still at large with malice aforethought used a gun to murder ASP Kirumira and Nalinya who were driving in a Saloon car belonging to Kirumira.

Kirumira and Nalinya were then rushed to Lubaga and Mulago hospitals respectively from where they were pronounced dead.

Sixteen suspects have since been arrested in connection to the murder. Among the suspects is a police officer Godfrey Ssenono the officer in charge of operations at Old Kampala Police Station, former operatives of the Flying Squad and 9 suspects rounded up in a raid last weekend from a suspected terror cell in Namungoona, a Kampala Suburb.
Besides Kalungi, other suspects are yet to be aligned before court.
