Kampala: Kyambogo University is likely to spend Shs162m for the by-election of the guild president following the impeachment of Jonathan Tundulu, a People Power member.

On Wednesday October 2, 2019 the Guild Cabinet moved a motion to impeach their president on grounds of concentrating on national politics and abandoning his responsibility to students, being selfish, abusing the ministers and being unaccountable.

While addressing the media today, the vice-chancellor Kyambogo university Prof. Ely Katunguka, said the motion was upheld with 79 votes, 4 votes against his impeachment, two votes invalid while six members abstained from the voting process.

When asked about the information circulating that he sponsored the impeachment of Tundulu, he distanced himself from allegations circulating on social media, noting that he had no interest in sponsoring such events and has no money to sponsor such activities.

“It was students who exercised their powers as contained in Article 10 Clause 3 of the guild constitution due to the continued disagreements amongst members of the guild cabinet,” he said.

“It’s the first time in the history of Kyambogo university for students to impeach their guild president. But I don’t know where social media media get what they write and circulate that I sponsored and funded the impeachment of the guild president; how?

And where did I get such funds of facilitating each member with Shs5m where by the total number of members is 95? That is a total lie!” Katunguka added.

He called upon students to remain calm and concetrate on their studies and avoid all manners of hooliganism, because anyone who wants to cause trouble will not be allowed to do so.

He warned that there is heavy deployment of police on the lookout and will arrest anyone disrupting the peace of others who want to study, and disciplinary proceedings will be instituted against anyone found culpable.

On September, 25, 2019, the Guild president called a cabinet meeting for which all ministers turned up but the convener, (the president) didn’t turn up.

In the afternoon of the same day during the Guild Representative Council (GRC) meeting, the president was critically queried for instituting an illegal vetting committee which he wanted to assess the ministers’ performance, something that forced him to storm out of the meeting.

Katunguka stated that “On Thursday, September 26, 2019, a vote of no confidence was moved against the Guild president Jonathan Tundulu and when he learnt of the vote of no confidence, he immediately announced a bloody week.”

Katunguka revealed that cabinet ministers and the Guild Speaker convened a GRC sitting on Wednesday, October, 2, 2019, to decide on whether to impeach Tundulu or not.

However, Katunguka also noted that is nice assuming office, Tundulu embarked on a campaign to force the University Council to withdraw the 12th week tuition pay policy, something which the Council couldn’t allow to happen.

According to him if the process of impeaching Tundulu goes well, they will have to ask government to avail them with money to re – organize the elections, estimated cost at least Shs162m.

It should be noted that Tundulu has since submitted an appeal against the impeachment to the University Council.
