Kyambogo Varsity Student Murders Teacher, Stuffs Body In Polythene Bag

Kampala: A student of Kyambogo University has been arrested over allegations of murdering his former teacher and stuffing the corpse in a polythene bag.

Robert Asiimwe, in his mid twenties, was arrested after the driver of a vehicle he had hired to collect garbage from his place became suspicious of the package that he had been directed to take to a dumping site.

The driver reportedly tipped the police, which rushed to the scene and established that the alleged garbage was actually a human corpse, stuffed in a polythene bag. Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) publicist SP Patrick Onyango  said the police arrested Assimwe on suspicion of killing his former teacher identified as Emmanuel Mugarura.

Onyango said that “Asiimwe confirmed that the deceased was called Emmanuel Mugarura, his former teacher at St. Charles Lwanga School in Bushenyi District. He said the teacher visited him two days earlier but suddenly died in his room.”

However, scene of crime officers (SOCO) and eyewitnesses said Mugarura’s body had bruises, an indication that he could have been a victim of strangulation. Onyango said police are now trying to establish what could have happened before and during Mugarura’s stay at Asiimwe’s home, which prompted the murder.

However, this is not the first incident for a Kyambogo student to be arrested over murder related cases. In 2016, Henry Kyagulanyi, also a student at the same university was arrested by Flying Squad Unit (FSU) over allegations of killing a 9 year old pupil of Lungujja Modern Primary School.

Kyagulanyi was arrested on August 7 after the pupil’s parents insisted that he was the last person with their boy. Upon interrogation, he confirmed that he had killed the boy and led police and journalists to Prof. Mondo Kagonyera’s farm in Bira, Wakiso District where he had buried the body.

Meanwhile, the police are still conducting investigations into Mugarura’s murder after which they will produce Asiimwe in court to answer the charges.
