In a court session attended by members of Kagezi’s family, the prosecution argued that the accused had committed the horrible crime with the intent to influence the government and intimidate the public.

Due to the gravity of the charges, Chief Magistrate Kakooza ruled that he lacked the jurisdiction to hear capital offenses, and the accused were remanded to Luzira government prison until November 20, 2023 for mention of their case.

State prosecutors, represented by Thomas Jatiko, an assistant DPP, and Lilian Omara, a chief state attorney, stood firm in their pursuit of justice.

The courtroom was tense as the defendants, some of whom were already serving sentences in different prisons, were led away. Their arrest and subsequent appearance in court marked a significant development in an investigation that had spanned eight years.

The arrest of the suspects was confirmed by President Museveni on Sunday 5.10.2023 after eight years since Kagezi who was the lead prosecutor in the July 2010 bomb suspects’ trial was gunned down in 2015 by unknown assailants as she returned home.

According to reports then, she had made a stop over to buy raw food with her children in a car when the ruthless assassins sprayed bullets and killed her instantly.

“The suspects in the killing of Joan Kagezi have finally been arrested. They are: Kibuuka John, Masajjage John, Kissekka Dan and Nasur Abdalla. They were riding on two motorcycles,” Museveni said in a statement on Sunday evening.

“I congratulate ISO and CID on the good work. They will soon be produced in court,” the President said in conclusion.
