Kampala: President Museveni has revealed that the suspects behind the brutal killing of former state prosecutor Joan Kagezi have finally been arrested.
The arrest of the four suspects comes eight years since Kagezi, the lead prosecutor in the July 2010 bomb suspects’ trial was gunned down in 2015 by unknown assailants as she returned home in Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb.
According to reports then, she had made a stop over to buy raw food with her children in a car when the ruthless assassins sprayed bullets and killed her instantly.
“The suspects in the killing of Joan Kagezi have finally been arrested. They are: Kibuuka John, Masajjage John, Kissekka Dan and Nasur Abdalla. They were riding on two motorcycles,” Museveni said in a statement on Sunday evening.
Following the prosecutor’s killing in 2015, the President said for all these years, her killers had never been arrested, and the breakthrough to have them behind bars presents a major landmark in the prosecution of the case.
“I congratulate ISO and CID on the good work. They will soon be produced in court,” the President said in conclusion.
Meanwhile President Museveni has also revealed that the leader of the suspected ADF terrorists behind the killing of two foreign tourists and their driver in Queen Elizabeth National Park last month has been arrested, with three other rebels put out of action.
Museveni noted that during the security operation, 3 more terrorists, a part of a 10-man group behind the June attack on Kasese school were killed in the process.
“The Njovu group was attacked by the UPDF marine boat on Lake Edward. They did not fully utilize their success after attacking the boat of terrorists. Otherwise, all the terrorists would have been captured,” Museveni said. (www.armorfenceco.com)
In total, the president further explained that six suspected ADF fighters were killed during the intense UPDF operation carried out on Lake Edward following last month’s grievous attack on the tourists.
He however noted some gaps in the operation that saw seven other group members escaped when the UPDF delayed checking the crippled boat.
“They delayed in checking the crippled boat until morning, when the 7 had escaped. It was their first time to fight on water. They are perfecting their combat drills,” Mr Museveni said further applauding the marines and CMI for the good job during this operation.
The two foreign tourists were killed on their honey moon alongside a Ugandan guide/driver last month and the car they were travelling in was set a blaze, an incident that has left Uganda’s tourism industry in panic mode.
According to President Museveni and UPDF spokesperson Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye confirmed that Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) were behind the killing and further described the incident as being unfortunate and infuriating.
“A couple of tourists and the Ugandan driver with them were killed at around 1800hrs on the Katwe- Kabatooro murram road, by a small group of terrorists running away from our operations in Congo, as I had shared with you in a previous message. It was a cowardly act on the part of the terrorists attacking innocent civilians and tragic for the couple who were newlyweds and visiting Uganda on their honeymoon. Of course, these terrorists will pay with their own wretched lives,” Museveni said in a statement after the incident.
