Lightning Strikes One Dead, Five Injured In Bushenyi

Bushenyi: One person have died and five injured when lightning struck during a downpour on Wednesday September 11.

The fateful incident happened at Nkuna 1 Village, Nyabubare Parish, Nyabubare Sub-county, Buhenyi District.

Uganda Police identified the deceased as Generous Kyomukama Busesire a resident of Nkuna 1 LC.

Five others of the same family were rushed to Kampala International Hospital in Ishaka for treatment.

Eye witnesses said, the deceased together with five others had sought shelter at their home when they were struck by lightning.

Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police Spokesperson said that the injured were working on a farm and took shelter at a nearby house when it started raining.

Bushenyi District is prone to lightning strikes which have left several people dead, the most recent incident happened in June where five people were struck dead and 25 injured during a downpour in Nyakatembe village in Bitooma sub-county, Bushenyi District.

In September 2016, eight pupils of Buramba Primary School in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality were struck dead.

In November 2015, lightning killed five pupils of Nyakabingo Primary School in Kakanju sub-county, Igara West in Bushenyi district and left four others injured.

Lightning strikes are common in Bushenyi district.  In Cases of strikes are also common in the neighbouring districts of Mitooma,Buhweju, Sheema and Rubirizi.
