Entebbe: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has finally fulfilled his promise and given IAAF World Athlete and Common Wealth Gold Medalist Joshua Cheptegei a brand new pick-up vehicle.
Norah Nassimbwa, the Head of sports at State House, desk handed over a Mitsubishi pick-up double cabin to Cheptegei at State House Nakasero today, on behalf of President Museveni, who is on his way to Uganda from a state visit in Russia.
Cheptegei’s gift comes after winning the men’s 10,000m gold at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, early this month.
He is the only Ugandan to win more than a medal at the Worlds, Cheptegei was on October 14, 2019, announced among the nominees for the annual IAAF Male Athlete of Year Award. He surprised many athletes to win to the men’s 5000m trophy at the IAAF Diamond League final in Zurich, Switzerland on August 29 before conquering the 25-lap race at the Khalifa International Stadium with a world lead time of 26:48.36 in Doha.
Cheptegei becomes the first Ugandan in history to make the 11-man shortlist made by a panel of athletics experts with representation from IAAF’s six continental areas.
