MAK Prof.William Bazeyo Wins Shs185 Billion Health Grant

Kampala: Makerere University College of Health lecturer Prof. William Bazeyo a Ugandan physician, public health specialist, academic, researcher, and academic administrator won a 185 billion Uganda shillings grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the US President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

The $50m award follows another of $30m (sh111b), dubbed Monitoring and Evaluation Support Project (METS), which has supported the health ministry for the last five years and ends on September 30.

Bazeyo, is a professor of occupational medicine and also acting deputy vice-chancellor (finance and administration) at Makerere University, a principal investigator of the project titled, Strengthening Uganda’s capacity for regionally Centred and District Implemented HIV and TB programming through Health Information Systems, Case-Based Surveillance, Monitoring and evaluation and quality improvement support.

He noted that the new grant is intended to develop the Uganda health sector through the Ministry of Health in a five years project dubbed “Strengthening the Government of Uganda’s Capacity for Regionally Centered and District Implemented HIV and TB Programming through Health Information Systems, Case Based Surveillance, Monitoring, Evaluation and Quality Improvement Support under PEPFAR”

Makerere University Vice chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe congratulated the lecturer towards reaching this milestone.

The Makerere University visitation committee report findings released in January 2018 ranked Bazeyo as the highest beneficiary of grants, totalling $62m (sh229b) between 2010 and 2018. Who is William Bazeyo?

William Bazeyo, is a Ugandan physician, public health specialist, academic, researcher, and academic administrator. Since September 2017, he has been the deputy vice chancellor in charge of finance and administration at Makerere University. During the preceding eight years, he was the dean of the Makerere University School of Public Health.

Bazeyo was born in Uganda circa 1957. After attending local schools, he attended and graduated from the Makerere University School of Medicine with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees. He then earned Master of Medicine in occupational health from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. Later, in 2014, he graduated with a Doctor of Public Health degree from Atlantic International University.

Bazeyo has been active in general practice and public health for two decades. He was a principal actor in the formation in 2005 of the Higher Education Alliance for Leadership Training for Health, which brings together seven schools of public health in six countries. He also serves as the director of the Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa, which supports government efforts to build and sustain the capacity to regulate tobacco in Africa.

In addition to his university assignments, Bazeyo serves as the chief-of-party at the Resilient Africa Network, which is composed of 20 universities in 16 African countries and whose mission is to strengthen the resilience of communities through education and innovative technologies and approaches.
