Makerere University To Scrap Off Evening Courses & Fire Lecturers-Vice Chancellor

Kampala: Makerere University management is considering scrapping off some courses and firing some lecturers as a measure to bring harmony at the ivory tower.

This follows a resolution by some lecturers not to conduct evening classes in the next financial year 2018/2019, incase the management fails to increase their gratuity. The lecturers cautioned the management against admitting new students in the coming academic year for evening classes if they’re not ready to revise their gratuity.

These lecturers have also gone ahead to give an ultimatum to have their gratuity paid, failure to do so, they will withdraw their labour.

Speaking to our reporter at Makerere University, the vice Chancellor Prof. Banarbus Nawangwe, revealed that they had a meeting with these lecturers and agreed to increase their gratuity but unconditionally, thus cautioning that the lecturers actions might land them into trouble.

He however called for patience from the lecturers since the management and Senate resolved to increase the gratuity for those teaching evening classes though he didn’t give a period this will be implemented.

In the same way Prof Nawangwe has revealed that they are to scrap off some courses taught in the evening especially those that do not bring in enough money to meet the lecturers expenses all in the spirit of bringing harmony at the ivory tower.

He emphasized that this will be done not later than March this year. However, he didn’t not reveal specific courses that are to be affected.

Meanwhile Prof Williams Tayebwa, the head journalism department says they are anxiously waiting for Wednesday to implement their resolution of not teaching evening classes come next financial year if their needs are not met.
