Mbarara North Member of Parliament, Robert Mwesigwa Rukari was on Wednesday [yesterday] remanded to Luzira Prison for a period of six months.
Rukari’s bad day reached while appearing before the Commercial Division of Kampala High Court to answer allegations that four years ago, he borrowed Shs 992m from Gerard Kalungi, the son of Kampala tycoon Godfrey Kirumira and failed to pay back.
Court documents show that on December 17, 2022, Rukaari was ordered to cough the debt by December 22, 2022, or face arrest but he only paid Ugx300m off the 900+million.
It’s against the above background that Court decided to keep Rukaari in Luzira prison for a period of 6 months.
“You’re hereby ordered to commit the said Mwesigwa into civil prison and keep him therein for a period not exceeding 6 months until the said decree shall be fully satisfied or the said Mwesigwa shall be otherwise entitled to be released according to the terms of provision section 43 of CPA,” the court order reads.
