In a breathtaking act of courage, two boda-boda riders became unexpected heroes after rescuing two children who had been stranded for over eight hours in the swollen waters of River Mubuku.

The children, Regan Mugabe (12) and Adolf Mugume (8), were returning from a fishing trip around 4pm on Sunday when they were cut off by the sudden rise of the river. Trapped and unable to return to safety, their situation grew increasingly dire as daylight faded.
Their father, Sunday Richard, rushed to the scene and attempted a rescue himself after seeing that police at the scene were unable to act due to a lack of proper equipment. Tragically, he also became stranded in the fast-moving waters.

As hope began to wane, two local boda-boda riders, Kiiza Boy and Adolf Murungi, stepped in. With no training or gear, they risked their own lives in a daring midnight rescue operation. Battling strong currents and pitch darkness, they managed to reach the trio and bring them to safety around 12am.

The rescue was met with overwhelming emotion. Onlookers, many of them women wrapped in blankets and prayerfully calling on Mother Mary and Jesus Christ, wept tears of joy as the children were returned safely to shore.
Joseph Isingoma, the Kasese District Senior Planner and disaster focal person, confirmed the timeline of events and praised the bravery of the rescuers. “These young men put their lives on the line. They are heroes,” he said.
Sunday Richard, still shaken by the ordeal, expressed his frustration at the lack of action from authorities. “It was heartbreaking to watch my child cry for help while security officers stood by, helpless. I couldn’t just wait—I had to try,” he said.
Mustafa Kikusa, Principal Secretary in the Office of the Kasese District Chief Administrative Officer, acknowledged the limitations faced by police marines in Katunguru, citing the lack of adequate gear for river rescues.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the district’s preparedness for natural disasters and the capability of emergency response teams. For now, however, the community is united in celebrating what many are calling a miracle—and the bravery of the ordinary men who made it possible.
