Minister Otafiire Warns Religious Leaders Against Sectarianism

By Micheal Atwakiire

Mitooma: The Minister of Justice and Constitution affairs Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has warned politicians from conflicting with religious leaders to promoting sectarianism as a way of gaining political mileage.

Kahinda while attending a church service at Bikungu Church of Uganda, Mutara Sub County, Mitooma District on 21 July advised the congregation to avoid divisions based on tribal and religious lines.
“Whoever is trying to practice it should be isolated to avoid causing serious turmoil in the country, this is one of the reasons why we went to the bush to curb these foolish differences in Ugandans, therefore those who want to reintroduce them shall politically harvest nothing from it and the consequences may not be good,” Kahinda advised.

He later reminded them of what happened in some countries neighboring Uganda where social issues of religious differences, ethnicity have not been addressed and urged them completely distance themselves from sectarian tendencies as they concentrate on spiritual teachings to believers.

Hon Dr Elioda Tumwesigye the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovations also appealed to all Ugandans to shun sectarianism saying “Africans are common people with the same aspirations, heritage and a shared destiny ,therefore we should fight hard along those lines rather than thinking of dividing themselves. We were all created in God’s image, I don’t see the reason as to why we hate each other, “ Said Dr. Tumwesigye

There was also a significant turn up at the fundraising of the church and more than Shs20M were collected.
